What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the highly volatile, natural aromatic compounds found in seeds, tree bark or even whole plants like peppermint, where the flowers and leaves are used to extract the oil. They’re not a new ‘fad’. The Egyptians used them thousands of years ago and they still play an important part in many cultures around the world.
What makes dōTERRA different?
In a nutshell, it’s to do with the purity and potency of their essential oils and supplements. Watch the short video (on the right) to find out more.
The essential oil industry is not regulated, so there are no assurances that a bottle labelled 100% pure essential oil is what it says – 100% pure.
dōTERRA means ‘Gifts of the Earth’. It’s a 15 year-old global company that’s passionate about providing pure essential oils and whole-food supplements without fillers or any artificial ingredients.
dōTERRA conduct more than 60 tests on their oils to ensure their purity and the results can be obtained through their Source to you barcodes.
How I got into essential oils
As a child, we didn’t use essential oils as a family. The nearest we got was buying soap containing Norfolk lavender essential oil when we went on holiday. It wasn’t until I was a teenager buying Body Shop products that I first got came across ‘natural’ products.
Following my nose, I used brands that smelt nice like Decléor. Then I moved onto paraben-free shampoos, shower gels and body lotions when I was pregnant and concerned about passing toxic chemicals onto my unborn baby. I was also a fan of the Bach remedies, but again, I didn’t know how they worked.
Now decades later, essential oils are so widely available. You can find them online and in supermarkets, health food shops and high street pharmacies. My first essential oil was lavender, which I used for sleep. Like many people, I just used them for their scent, not realising they can be used for so much more.
Continuing education within a supportive community
Five years ago I bought my first dōTERRA essential oils (the Family Essentials kit) and had lots of questions. How do I use them? How much do I use? Which oil do I use for what? I love learning so I dived right in. I joined a sleep ‘oil study’ and watched loads of continuing education classes to find out more and hear other people’s experiences. I was inspired and even more impressed when I heard doctors and other professionals sharing how they use these oils to support their own health and wellbeing. There’s so much knowledge out there and it’s great to be part of a community of friendly, supportive people.
In 2020 I decided to sell essential oils as a dōTERRA Wellness Advocate, supporting people across the UK who are looking for natural options for their health needs. I’d seen first-hand how well the essential oils and supplements work for me and my family. Essential oils also felt like the perfect companion to my nature connection walks, which I’d had to put on hold during the pandemic. It’s been a very rewarding journey so far. I’ve met some amazing people who continue to inspire me with their own wonderful oil ‘experiences’. If you’d like to know, please get in touch.
The other day I found the old medicines we used to turn to: Calpol and ibuprofen for high temperatures, Savlon and creams for fungal infections and verracas. They’ve all been abandoned and are out of date!
Here’s how they’ve worked for other people
The deep blue rub definitely helped with the bad headaches the week before the migraines. I had the start of a migraine this evening and within half an hour of the rub it’s significantly disappeared.
